Per Elliotte Friedman, the Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Mason Geertsen to a two-year contract, reportedly worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $425,000 at the AHL level. Geertsen will likely go to the AHL’s Rochester Americans.
Geertsen, 30, appeared in 31 games with the Henderson Silver Knights this past season. He had five assists and 77 penalty minutes. He’s spent most of his professional career in the AHL, aside from 25 NHL games with the New Jersey Devils a few seasons ago.
In November 2024, Geertsen released a statement announcing that was in remission after previously being diagnosed with B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma in November 2023.
Geetsen was originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche with the 93rd overall pick in 2013.
Tony Androckitis, of Inside AHL Hockey, also reports that the Sabres are re-signing right-handed defenseman Zach Metsa, as well as potentially adding right wing Carson Meyer.
Metsa, 26, was an alternate captain last season, in his second full season with the Amerks. He registered 46 points, including 39 assists, in 69 regular season games.
