The Buffalo Sabres came into tonight’s game coming off a rough loss to the Penguins, and all eyes were waiting to see how they’d respond to that adversity.
The answer? Not very well.
Between the second and third periods, the Sabres gave up four straight goals that took the game from tied to blowout real quickly, and ended up losing to the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3.
The game started off with the Flyers taking it to Buffalo, scoring the game’s first goal and putting up 16 shots on the Sabres. The team, and their coach, weren’t happy with how the game started.
“I thought we weren’t ready to play the game, that’s what it looked like,” Bylsma said. “Maybe a little shell-shocked, maybe back on our heels from the previous game.”
“We weren’t ready right from the start,” captain Brian Gionta added. “The first period they took it to us. “We were lucky to come out tied.”
Buffalo would respond with a goal of their own, as Evander Kane continued to roll through the NHL, scoring his 24th goal of the season on the power play.
The second period saw the teams trade goals from Radko Gudas and Jack Eichel, and then the Flyers would leave the Sabres in the dust, scoring the next four goals and essentially slamming the door on the Sabres hopes before the second period came to an end.
The goals came on a combination of poor goaltending and horrible defensive coverage. Tonight was certainly not Robin Lehner’s best effort, as the goalie once again struggled with rebound control. He wasn’t helped by defensemen and forwards who looked completely lost in their own zone, and Buffalo’s chicken-and-egg scenario with poor defensemen versus poor strategy continues.
If there was one bright spot tonight, it was that Jack Eichel and Evander Kane continued their fantastic run this season. Eichel scored his second goal of the night towards the end of the game to give him three points on the night and 45 points in 46 games.

2. How will the Sabres respond to the way they lost against Pittsburgh?
