Recap: Sabres get an overtime win over the Penguins

The night got off to a good start for the Sabres as the jumped out to an early lead. Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson put a pass on the stick of Jack Eichel above the face off circle.

Eichel made no mistake and snapped a shot by Matt Murray to make it 1-0 less than four minutes into the game.

In typical Sabres fashion, they gave up the lead about a minute later. Nick Bjugstad wristed a nice shot over the shoulder of Linus Ullmark. The Sabres goaltender may have gone down a little early, but it was a nice shot by the Penguins forward.

The Penguins held the shot advantage in the opening period and would end up doing so for most of the night.

However, the Sabres were able to exit the first period with the lead. Kyle Okposo found Conor Sheary in front for his 10th of the season on the power to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Penguins continued to control play in the middle frame. The Sabres held off the scoreboard for most of the period thanks to some great goaltending by Linus Ullmark.

Unfortunately, some late penalties finally caught up to the Sabres. Scott Wilson took a four minute high-sticking penalty after they just killed off another penalty. The Penguins would end up scoring twice with the man advantage.

First Patric Hornqvist deflected a shot past Ullmark. Then just over a minute later Sidney Crosby picked up his usual goal against the Sabres off a nice pass from Evgeni Malkin.

The Penguins would hold a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Buffalo was a much different team in the final 20 minutes. They put a lot of pressure on the Penguins, but were unable to get a puck by Murray.

With 2:52 left and his team trailing by one, Brandon Montour, scored his first goal as a Sabre to tie the game. His point shot went off the leg of a Penguins defenseman and by Murray to send the game to overtime.

The overtime was a back and forth affair between the two clubs. They exchanged chances, but it was the Sabres that found the go-ahead goal.

Conor Sheary picked up a loose puck on the boards, skated to the middle of the ice put the winner under the bar.
