NHL Free Agency: Sabres sign defenseman Taylor Fedun for the Amerks

The Buffalo Sabres added another depth blueliner to the organization early on in the NHL Free Agency, signing defenseman Taylor Fedun.

The 28-year-old right-hander has mostly featured in the AHL in his career, playing in a handful of NHL games for the Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks.

The Ukrainian-Canadian player is 6’0″ and 201lbs, and is described by Elite Prospects back in 2013 as –

Fedun is a mobile, quick-skating defenseman. Has good hockey sense and a sound positional game. Could add some weight to better handle bigger forwards.

After the Sabres lost Chad Ruhwedel to free agency today, they have made moves to replenish the defenseman cupboard with this signing and the addition of Justin Falk on a two-way contract.

Fedun had suffered a horrible injury early on in the 2011-12 season when playing for the Oilers, and was one of the pivotal incidents that eventually lead to no-touch icing being implemented in the NHL.

His recovery from that shattered femur was an inspirational story put on video by the Oilers, and can be seen here.
