NHL Free Agency Rumors: Sabres considering trading Evander Kane

Evander Kane can’t seem to stay out of the news, no matter what organization he’s playing hockey for. Since being traded to the Sabres, Kane has been the subject of multiple police reports, gotten in trouble for missing practice after attending the NBA All-Star Game, and has had a public presence in Buffalo that’s been very up and down.

Now, according to at least one NHL personality, the Buffalo Sabres may be looking to rid themselves of the controversial winger.

In his appearance on Hockey Hotline this morning, former player and current radio host Georges Laraque told Andrew Peters and Craig Rivet that the Sabres are exploring trading Kane. Here’s what Laraque had to say:

“I think now they want to pull the plug on it. He’s not gonna be easy to give away – I don’t even know if you can give that guy away with all this baggage, but that’s what’s coming from your GM from an agent I was talking to. So there will be big things coming up in Buffalo.”

One would think that trading Kane would require the Sabres to get a bit less than market value, thanks to his constant off-ice troubles. But then again, yesterday showed us that crazier things are possible if you make the right calls. Should the Sabres choose to take a more extreme route and buy out Kane’s contract, they would have until 5pm today to do so.

Kane was part of the trade that brought Zach Bogosian and Jason Kasdorf to Buffalo, in exchange for Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford, Brendan Lemieux, Joel Armia, and a 2015 late first round pick. He scored 20 goals and 15 assists in 65 games last season.

You can listen to Laraque’s audio here. We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
