NHL Draft 2016: Sabres take Philip Nyberg at #129

The Buffalo Sabres had two picks in a row in the fifth round, and took a defenseman with the first at #129, Swede Philip Nyberg from Linkoping in the Swedish Juniors League.

Nyberg is committed to the University of Wisconsin for the upcoming season. He shoots right-handed and turned 19 earlier this year, measuring in at 6′ 3″, 192lbs.

The Sabres made Nyberg their third Swede of this Draft, while building up their defensive prospects pipeline. He was born in Karlskrona, Sweden, and spent last season with Linköping HC J20 in Sweden’s SuperElit league. In 45 games he recorded four goals and 18 points.

Badgers head coach Tony Granato had this to say about the defenseman –

“He is a very athletic, explosive skater. His first two steps are really good. He’s also a quality person from a quality family with great character.”
