Jason Pominville Heads To Europe, Tyler Ennis Returns Injured

Jason Pominville was awarded the Sabres captaincy last year in Germany, and with no end to the NHL lockout in sight, he’s heading back to where he began his reign to get some much-needed game action.

Pominville has signed with Adler Mannheim in the German elite league; he is set to join the team next week. He becomes the eighth Sabres player to flee to Europe, and says it’s mostly to get an extended pre-season. From the Sabres Edge blog:

“If we do end up playing, we’re probably not going to play for another two weeks to a month, so it gives me basically a mini training camp where I can get into shape and do what I need to get ready when it starts and if it starts.”

Tyler Ennis, on the other hand, is returning to the States. Unfortunately, it’s because he’s sustained his second injury of his European vacation according to Szymon Szember, the Comunications Director of the IIHF. Ennis has played in just 10 games for Langnau and has scored 8 points while suffering two injuries. Details of the injury haven’t been revealed, but the fact that Ennis is coming home, likely for good, should be reason enough for Sabres fans to worry.

Were Ennis to be out for any serious amount of time, the Sabres would remain perilously thin at center. Neither Cody Hodgson nor Ennis qualify as “proven NHL centers”, and with both injured, the team might have to look to players like Ville Leino or even Jason Pominville to fill the void were the season to miraculously start in the next few weeks.
