Greatest Promotion Ever: Sabres To Sponsor Newborn Babies

As 2012 comes to a close, we can all agree that’s it’s been a rough year for hockey fans. But with their latest promotion, the Buffalo Sabres are ensuring that 2013 will be a great year for Buffalo’s newest hockey fans.

Taken straight from the “so crazy it’s actually brilliant” file, the Sabres will offer all newborns at Millard Fillmore Suburban and the Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo a free Sabres baby blanket and a certificate signed by Terry Pegula welcoming them to the community of Sabres fans.

It’s a partnership with Kaleida Health that will run through 2013, and god willing, until the year I have children. Over 6,000 children are expected to receive the yellow blankets with “We Love Hockey” emblazoned on the back and their own personalized “Future First Round Pick” certificate signed by the Sabres owner.

Here’s Sabres president Ted Black, courtesy of Sabres.com:

“Fandom in Buffalo is something that runs much deeper than in most other places,” said Black. “Even from birth, people here know that hockey and the Sabres are a part of life. This program is a way for us to welcome the newest members of our community and hopefully plant the seed of passion that will grow into a lifetime of embracing the game that we all love so deeply here in Buffalo.”

Terry Pegula promised to do whatever it took to win a Stanley Cup, but I didn’t think he would go so far as to indoctrinate the newborns in Buffalo. Still, what better way to endear yourself to local families than by offering congratulations and some free swag? Bravo, Terry. Bravo.
