Foligno, Grigorenko lead Sabres over Blue Jackets 3-1

Marcus Foligno scored two goals, including an impressive Bobby Orr-esque flying goal, to help lead the Buffalo Sabres to their second preseason victory.

Mikhail Grigorenko added a goal of his own, while Ryan Miller and Matt Hackett combined to let in just one goal (Miller) on 25 shots.

Buffalo’s top two lines looked very impressive in this game, with the line of Vanek-Hodgson-Foligno looking like their various skills complement each other very well. It reminds me of playing NHL ’04, where you’d get a bonus if you had a sniper, a playmaker, and a grinder all on the same line. Foligno is proving that he can stick with the Sabres big guns, now he just has to keep it up.

The line of Tropp-Grigorenko-Girgensons also looked good last night, with the two wingers effectively clearing space to let their playmaking Russian center do his thing.

The Sabres blueline performed pretty well last night as well, with Myers and Ehrhoff helping to set up Foligno’s firste goal. Jerome Gauthier-Leduc got caught watching the play on Columbus’s only goal from R.J. Umberger, but other than that the young back end looked pretty solid.

The Sabres move to 2-0 in the preseason, and will face off against Nathan Gerbe and the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, in Buffalo.
