The Buffalo Sabres are seriously in need of a win tonight against the Calgary Flames, a team that has slightly struggled to start the season. The Flames are sitting at 5-5-1 on the season and are coming off a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. For a couple of players though, it is a homecoming for a couple of players as well.
Robyn Regehr spent 11 seasons with the Calgary Flames before he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres for Chris Butler and Paul Byron during the offseason. Regehr played a total of 826 games for the Flames and went to one Cup Final with Calgary back in 2003. When talking to the Sabres’ Kevin Snow, Regehr expressed how excited he was to face the Flames again:
“I’d love to beat any team. But especially when you’re playing a team that you’ve played with for a long time, the first time you play them you’ll want to beat them. Anytime we go out there, it doesn’t matter against who – we want to win the game. That’s the ultimate goal.”
Regehr was asked by the Calgary media whether there was a chance that he was going to change his game against his old teammates. His response was pretty much the response you would expect:
“None at all. If the opportunity arises . . . Hey, you know me. That’s what I do. I hit people.”
The other player in that Regehr trade that is currently playing on the Flames roster is Chris Butler. Butler has played in all 11 games for the Flames and has three points while averaging 20:46, which is good for third on the team.
If the Sabres are looking for a good omen for getting a win tonight, the Calgary Flames have not won a game in Buffalo since March 15, 1996 when the Flames beat the Sabres 3-1 in the Memorial Auditorium. Game time is 7:30 pm.
