Cunneyworth named head coach of the Rochester Americans
Cunney spent nine seasons on the Americans coaching staff from 1999 to 2008.
The Sabres took quite a bit of time choosing the man to coach the Rochester Americans - so much time that some began to wonder what the holdup was. Turns out, the coach was employed by the team the entire time. Rochester has announced their next head coach is a familiar face, Randy Cunneyworth.
Cunneyworth was the Americans head coach from 2000 to 2008, making the playoffs six times. He was named the AHL's coach of the Year in 2006. Cunneyworth originally joined the coaching ranks as a player-coach with Rochester in 1999.
Following his departure from Rochester, he spent two seasons with the Trashers as an assistant from 2008 to 2010 before returning to head coaching duties with Hamilton. During his second season in the Canadiens organization he was named Montreal's interim head coach following to firing of Jacques Martin. He had a record of 18-23-9.
In 2013 he returns to the Sabres organization as a scout. He was promoted earlier this off-season to Player Development Coach. Although he won't be moving between Buffalo and Rochester as much as that position supposedly originally entailed, he still will be instrumental in the development of the team's youth.
You can check out our profile on Cunneyworth from earlier this summer, when I wrote about him as a possible candidate for the Sabres head coaching position.
