Sabres trade up to select John-Jason Peterka in the second round

The Buffalo Sabres traded up to the 34th overall pick to select John-Jason Peterka out of Germany. They traded the 38th pick and 100th pick (fourth-round) to the San Jose Sharks to move up and pick the winger.

Peterka was ranked as a first round talent by many and was a bit of a surprise to slide all the way down the board to 34. He played for EHC Munchen in DEL last season scoring seven goals and 11 points in 42 games. Those are not bad numbers for an 17-year-old playing in a mens league. This season he’s on loan playing in Austria with EC Salzburg.

The German-born forward plays with some grit in his game and an agressive forechecker. Peterka doesn’t has huge upside as a scoring winger. He’s a forward that can be a consistent 20-25 goal scorer in the NHL and be difficult to play against for a long time with his drive.

The Sabres are next on the board in the fifth round at pick 131.
