Buffalo Sabres Trade Marco Scandella, Acquire Michael Frolik

Prior to Thursday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, the Buffalo Sabres have announced the team’s first trades of 2020, just a short time after the league’s roster freeze ended.

The Sabres have sent defenseman Marco Scandella to the Montreal Canadiens. In return, Buffalo picks up a fourth-round pick in 2020. The draft pick was originally owned by the San Jose Sharks. Buffalo does not retain any salary.

Scandella played 176 games with the Sabres since 2017. He recorded 30 points and was a minus-19. Overall, he’s played in 549 regular-season NHL games between Minnesota and Buffalo.

In a corresponding move, the Sabres sent the draft pick acquired in the Scandella trade to the Calgary Flames in exchange for right winger Michael Frolik.

Frolik, 31, was drafted by the Florida Panthers in 2006 with the 10th-overall selection. He spent three seasons in Florida before joining the Chicago Blackhawks. He won the Stanley Cup there in 2013.

After three seasons there, he played for two seasons in Winnipeg before heading to the Flames in 2015.

Overall, he has appeared in 831 career regular-season games and recorded 380 points, including 158 goals. This season, he has ten points (5-5) in 38 games.

No salary was retained in the Frolik trade. He is a pending UFA come July 2020.

Stay tuned, as these may not be the only deals the Sabres make.
