Buffalo Sabres Trade Jordan Leopold To St. Louis Blues For Picks

After a slow start dealing TJ Brennan to Florida for a fifth rounder, the first big trade domino has fallen for the Buffalo Sabres. TSN is reporting that Jordan Leopold has been traded to the St. Louis Blues for a second round and a conditional fifth round pick in the 2013 NHL draft. The conditional pick turns into a fourth rounder if St. Louis wins a playoff series this year.

Leopold, always a class act on and off the ice, leaves Buffalo after two and a half seasons, tallying 25 goals and 42 assists in 174 games for the blue and gold.

The fact that GM Darcy Regier got two picks, one of which a second rounder, for Leopold is a pretty nice package, considering the inconsistency in Leo’s play this season (though you could say that about basically the entire team). The picks give the Sabres flexibility not only in next year’s draft, but to possibly use as part of a package to acquire a young player or two that could help the team more immediately.

With Leopold’s expiring contract off the books, Robyn Regehr is the other big name that playoff bound teams may be looking to rent. Regehr seemingly has more value in the trade market, if reports and teams interested are to be believed, so it will be very interesting to see what Regier might be able to get for the aging defenseman.
