Buffalo Sabres Top 25 Under 25

Summertime is always slow when writing a hockey blog. Therefore we decided to get creative (and by creative I mean steal an idea from another blog) to keep things alive throughout August and September. Our new feature will be a ranking of the top 25 players in the Sabres organization that are under 25 years old. This has been done on other SB Nation sites like The Copper and Blue as well as Lighthouse Hockey.

The rankings for this feature were done by a combination of writers here at Die by the Blade. Site Manager Andy Boron obviously contributed, as well as Jack N. Goods, Calvin H and myself. We all ranked our top 25 players and those rankings were averaged out to compile our final list. Unfortunately when ranking only 25 players, some had to be left off of the list. Today we will take a look at a few of the players that did not make our list.

Linus Ullmark – Goalie – 6’3″ 198lbs.

Ullmark is a 20 year old goalie who has played his entire career in Sweden until this point. Ullmark really came into his own as a goalie this season. He played great for the Modo Jr. team posting a 2.04 GAA and a .924 save percentage in 23 games played. He also played six games with the Modo Elite team and had a 2.07 GAA and a .934 save percentage. He probably could have been ranked in the top 25, but he suffers because most of us have not had an opportunity to see him play.

Gustav Possler – Left Wing – 6’0″ 183 lbs.

Possler is another Swedish player that most people haven’t had the opportunity to see play. He has been impressive with the Swedish Junior team that is playing a tournament this week in Lake Placid with USA, Canada and Finland. Possler has posted two goals and two assists in four games thus far. Sweden will conclude the tournament against Finland on Saturday afternoon.

Christian Isackson – Right Wing – 6’2″ 190 lbs.

Isackson was drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 draft by the Buffalo Sabres. Isackson. After being drafted as a high school player he went on to play a season in the USHL with the Sioux Falls Stampede. Isackson had a great season in the USHL with 44 points in 58 games, but his college career has been a struggle through two seasons. He played only 11 games and no points in his freshman year. His numbers increased for his sophomore season as he netted four goals and 20 points in 40 games. This season could be a make or break season for Isackson.

Logan Nelson – Center – 6’1″ 179 lbs.

Nelson was a fifth round draft pick of the Sabres in 2012. He has played the past two seasons with Victoria in the Western Hockey League. He has been a steady contributor in both seasons with Royals. Last season he had 41 points in 49 games and also had six points, including two goals, in six playoff games. He will remain in the Western Hockey League this season.

Colin Jacobs – Center – 6’1″ 215 lbs.

Jacobs was a fourth round pick of the Sabres in the 2011 draft. He had his best season last year with the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League. Last season he also joined the Rochester Americans near the end of the season and he played in 11 games. Jacobs played well in his 11 game stint with the Amerks, with a goal and two assists. He will be a player to watch in his first full season as a professional.

Look for the 25 player countdown in the upcoming days. Feel free to leave your top 25 rankings in the commenst below and compare to our top 25 throughout the summer.
