Buffalo Sabres Top 25 Under 25: #5, Devon Levi

Rochester goalie Devon Levi makes a big save on this shot against Laval.

The Top 25 Under 25 is a collaboration by members of the Die By The Blade community. 117 readers ranked Buffalo Sabres players under the age of 25 as of August 1, 2025. Each participant used their own metric of current ability and production to rank each player.

Devon Levi

Drafted: 2020 – 7th Round (212th Overall), traded to the Sabres from the Panthers

Position: Goaltender

Born: December 27, 2001 – 23 Years Old

2024-2025 Stats: 42 GP | 25-13-4 | .919 SV% (ROC); 9 GP | 2-7 | .872 SV% | 4.12 GAA (BUF)

2025 Calder Cup Playoffs: 8 GP | 5-3 | .910 SV%

2024 T25U25 Ranking: 8

Moving up in the rankings this year is – perhaps surprisingly? – goaltender Devon Levi. While his time with the Sabres was limited last season, he made an impact in Rochester as the 23-year-old continues to develop. That development must be moving at an acceptable pace as Buffalo just signed the Quebec native to a two-year contract extension with an average annual value of $812,500. In 68 total regular season games with the Amerks so far, Levi earned 42 wins and executed a 2.28 GAA. He ranked third in wins in the AHL last season and first in shutouts with seven.

Levi also shone in the Calder Cup, helping his team get as far as the division finals in mid-May. Prior to that, he has participated in several showcases, international championships, and the like:

Levi seemed to really find his groove with the Amerks last season, clearly the right move from a management standpoint. However, with a new season on the horizon, it will be interesting to see which goaltender gets the nod as number one. There was also a new addition in veteran Alex Lyon this past offseason. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was sadly a disappointment last year, especially in the latter half of the season when James Reimer became the more reliable guy between the pipes. UPL managed just 24 wins and a .887 SV%.

And, even though Levi began the last two seasons in the NHL, his occupancy did not last long when he was called back down to the AHL. Is this a bad sign? Not necessarily – since he did very well there – but he will be turning 24 in December and Buffalo desperately needs to fix their never-ending problems before some of the players the organization has been waiting on are past their prime. With the news of Ukko Pekka Luukkonen’s injury, Levi will get a chance during training camp to show he can play in Buffalo again.

If there was ever a time to prove yourself worthy of an NHL spot, it will certainly be during these next two seasons as the Sabres continue their mission to end a frustrating 14-year playoff drought and struggling in as many years with disappointing goaltending.
