Jiri Kulich took another step in his development by earning a full-time role in Buffalo last season. It was a welcome surprise to see him make the team out of training camp. He already had two successful AHL seasons under his belt, and fans were excited to see what he could do at the NHL level. Not only was he a fixture in the lineup, but he also spent significant time centering the top line. While more experienced centers in Tage Thompson and Dylan Cozens were shifted to the wing for not meeting expectations in Lindy Ruff’s system, Kulich earned his coach’s trust and saw his role elevated.

Kulich’s calling card has always been his shot. He has a deadly combination of quickness and velocity. He arguably has the second-best one-timer behind Thompson, although Josh Norris might have something to say about that if he can stay healthy. As Kulich’s game grows, the Sabres could utilize him more opposite Thompson on the power play to create a lethal combination.

Another reason for Kulich’s smooth transition to the NHL level is his exceptional skating. If he gets a step on the defender, they will have a hard time catching up to him. The puck control he has while at top speed makes him a serious threat to score off the rush.

He went through the typical ups and downs that are expected of a 20-year-old rookie, but he had a very good year. He was solid in his own zone and showcased the skills that could lead to a long and productive NHL career. The Sabres have a very good young center on their hands.
