This past season, Peyton Krebs set career highs in games played, goals, assists, and points. However, he had one less goal and assist in 7 less games than he had during the 2022-2023 season. The stagnation in development has left Sabres fans wondering about his role on the team.
Krebs has all the tools to be a point producing NHL forward. When his offensive game is on, he’s able maintain possession while waiting for the opportune moment to set up a teammate. His playmaking ability could make him a successful top 6 forward, but he has not been provided that opportunity for any significant stretch of time to date. He’s been all over the bottom half of the forward lines as both a winger and center.
Despite the undefined role, Krebs has done everything he can to be successful. His work ethic and willingness to do whatever the coaching staff has asked of him is unquestioned. He’s made the biggest impact as a 4th line center that can occasionally chip in offensively. When the opportunity presents itself, he can capitalize on offensive opportunities.
As the years have gone by, Krebs has developed a physical edge to his game to help improve his impact in the role given to him. The Sabres have a few players who are consistently physical, but it’s not as prevalent as other teams. Krebs has helped fill in the gap. He can even be counted on to drop the gloves if the moment calls for it.
His team first mentality may have stunted his offensive development, but he has found a way to make an impact in other ways. As he enters a contract year, look for him to be particularly motivated to prove his worth.
