Sabres sign Riley Sheahan to a professional tryout contract
Sabres bring in another forward to compete ahead of training camp
The Buffalo Sabres announced that they’re bringing another forward to training camp when it opens on Thursday. They signed veteran Riley Sheahan to a professional tryout contract (PTO).
The 29-year-old played with the Edmonton Oilers last season and has moved around a handful of clubs the last few years. He has some scoring touch to his game as he has scored at least 30 points twice in his career.
At this point, the Sabres likely see him as a fourth-line forward that can battle for a roster spot. He’s also a possibility of someone that they can add to their taxi squad to hold depth in the organization.
It’ll be interesting to see how players in Sheahan’s situation that are battling for a roster spot are able to earn one without preseason games. They’ll also have a shortened training camp to show up in practices and scrimmages.
Sheahan will directly be competing for a spot against players such as Arttu Ruotsalainen, Casey Mittelstadt, Curtis Lazar, and Tage Thompson.
On a separate note, JS Dea cleared waivers today.
