Sabres select defenseman Ryan Johnson to end round one

The Buffalo Sabres decided to keep the last pick of the first round they acquired as part of the package in the Ryan O’Reilly trade from the St. Louis Blues. With the 31st pick in the draft they selected left-shot defenseman Ryan Johnson from the Sioux Fall Stampede of the USHL.

The American-born defender is smooth skater that excels at breaking the puck out of his own end of the ice. He’s also good in his own end of the ice, but probably won’t give you a lot offensively in the NHL. He scored six goals and 25 points in 54 games this season. Johnson will attend the University of Minnesota next year.

Round one was a little disappointing with only one trade of draft picks. We’ll see if we get any more action on day two of the draft. The Sabres go into tomorrow with six picks throughout the day. Things get underway at 1 PM EST. tomorrow.
