Sabres release training camp roster

The Buffalo Sabres released their training camp roster. They’ve invited a total of 37 players to camp this year. The Sabres will open camp on December 31st because they were one of the seven teams that did not return to play last season.

The NHL allowed for teams to carry a training camp roster of no more than 36 skaters. They are allowed to carry as many goaltenders as they want.

As of now, the roster consists of 20 forwards, 12 defensemen, and five goaltenders. This puts the Sabres at 32 skaters; leaving them a few spots to add players.

Coming Soon?

It’s likely that both Dylan Cozens and Jack Quinn will join the team in January after the completion of World Juniors. The final day of the tournament is set for January 5th if Canada makes it to the Gold Medal game.

Jean-Sebastien Dea is also not listed on the roster. He was placed on waivers today. If he clears tomorrow at noon, the assumption would be that he’s also added to the roster.

These three additions would put the Sabres at 35 skaters.

Omissions

Casey Nelson was not invited to camp due to his decision to opt-out of the season. The other players under contract that were not invited were Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Oskari Laaksonen, Matej Pekar, and Dawson DiPietro.

Luukkonen, Laaksonen, and Pekar all remain with their clubs in Europe. They’ll head back to North America if/when the AHL season gets underway. That date is currently set as February 4th.
