Extreme Overreactions From The Sabres Season Opener

As a good hockey fan should know, whatever happens in the first game of the year for any team in the National Hockey League should carry through for the rest of the season. The first game sets the tone for the rest of the season and that continues to carry through for the rest of the seven months of the season. So without fail, this is what we should expect as fans of the Buffalo Sabres.

The Buffalo Sabres will go 0 for 572 on the power play and 492 for 492 on the penalty kill

The Sabres power play went 0 for 7 on the power play against the Red Wings and while they had plenty of offensive chances to find the back of the net, including two five on three chances, the team could only muster seven shots on goal and didn’t look all that effective. There really was no leader on the power play unit, even though supposed power play quarterback Christian Ehrhoff played over eight minutes on the power play.

The Sabres penalty kill looked solid as the Red Wings had six power plays of their own and managed only six shots on goal. Mark Pysyk led the team with 3:23 of shorthanded time and overall was one of the more solid players the Sabres had on a shaky opening night.

Zemgus Girgensons will win the Calder Trophy thanks to his 82 goal season

The lone Sabres goal on the night was an impressive display of stick work by Girgensons. Girgensons only got 11:23 of ice time, thanks in large part to the lack of time he had on the power play. Playing all night with Mikhail Grigorenko and Brian Flynn, Girgensons lone goal was the biggest thing to jump off the scoring sheet on a night that didn’t have a lot going for the Sabres.

Drew Stafford, Tyler Myers, Tyler Ennis, and Ville Leino will not record a shot all season

Only 10 Sabres had a shot on goal recorded against the Detroit Red Wings while the team was outshot 34-20 by the Red Wings. Four players tied for a team high three shots on goal and three of them were defensemen, Christian Ehrhoff, Mark Pysyk, and Rasmus Ristolainen.

If the Sabres are going to get some offense going this season, their offensive players need to find a way to get the puck toward the net. The Red Wings did a good job of stifling the Sabres and swarming in both the offensive and defensive zones.

The Sabres will go 0-82 this season

If the team can’t win the first game, they won’t win any more for the rest of the season.
