Sabres re-sign Jake McCabe, Cole Schneider

On the night before free agency opens, the Buffalo Sabres have retained two more restricted free agents with new deals. Both Jake McCabe and Cole Schneider have been re-signed and will be back with the Sabres organization next season.

The McCabe deal looks very good from the Sabres perspective – the young defenseman signed a three-year deal with an average cap hit of $1.6 million per season. McCabe has grown in to a reliable second-pairing blueliner, and at just 22 years old, this deal means he will still be an RFA when this deal is up. He played in 77 games this season, scored four goals and ten assists, and led all Sabres players with a +6 rating.

Cole Schneider, on the other hand, is a name you might not remember unless you remember the blockbuster AHL deal the Sabres made with the Senators back in February. Schneider, a native of Western New York, signed a one-year, two-way deal with Buffalo, and while he did play in two NHL games last season, figures to spend most of his time in Rochester next year.

The Sabres still have five RFAs who have not yet signed their qualifying offers – Rasmus Ristolainen, Zemgus Girgensons, Marcus Foligno, Dan Catenacci, and Jason Kasdorf.
