This season we’re going to try something different with our game recaps on the site. The initial plan is to move away from the literal game recaps. Instead we’d like to put something up either after the game or early the next day. This write up will consist of general thoughts and opinions from the game that is meant to generate further conversation on the site.
So, let’s get to our first recap of the season.
The Buffalo Sabres opened their preseason schedule tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Penn State University. Throughout most of the night they were in control of the contest. The Sabres put a mostly NHL lineup on the ice against a mostly AHL roster for the Penguins.
Buffalo built up a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes. However, they allowed the Penguins to climb back into the game in the third period with three goals to tie the game. The Sabres outshot their opponent 47 to 18 overall, but needed a Jack Eichel goal in overtime to pick up the victory.

A few players stood out throughout the night. The top pair of Rasmus Dahlin and Henri Jokiharju looked solid throughout the night. Dahlin had a few mistakes that resulted in goals against, but he also made a handful of really nice plays throughout the night. Jokiharju was solid throughout and showcased some of the upside the Sabres were hoping for when they acquired him.
John Gilmour had a nice night in his debut. His speed and offensive upside were evident early in the game. He scored the Sabres first goal by flying down the wing, catching a pass, and skating right past the Penguins defender to score.

Tage Thompson was another player that had a strong performance in his first game under a new coaching staff. He was good with the puck on his stick most of the night and scored their fourth goal of the game on the power play.
A few others that stood out include Conor Sheary, Curtis Lazar, and Colin Miller. Dylan Cozens had some good moments in his first NHL action and didn’t look out of place.
The Sabres are back in action tomorrow night when they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets.
