Sabres assign five to Rochester

The Buffalo Sabres narrowed down their roster this afternoon, assigning five players to the Rochester Amerks. Jonas Johansson, Kyle Criscuolo, Andrew Oglevie, Danny O’Regan and C.J. Smith were among those sent down.

The most surprising cut was Smith, who by all accounts had put forth one of the more impressive performances throughout the preseason, and was seen by many as a roster bubble player.

Some of the more notable players who still remain with the big club are Alex Nylander, Justin Bailey, Nick Baptiste, Victor Olofsson, Rasmus Asplund and Will Borgen. The roster cut-down will continue following tonight’s game against a Pittsburgh Penguins squad that will consist mostly of NHL-level talent.

The Amerks opened their training camp on Monday. They’ll kick off their preseason tomorrow night at HARBORCENTER against the Toronto Marlies.

They should have an influx of talent begin to flow down in the next 48-72 hours as the Sabres look to finalize their roster.
