Sabres announce first training camp cuts and send eight to the AHL

When the Buffalo Sabres resume practice tomorrow, they’ll only have two more ahead of their Thursday evening matchup with the Washington Capitals. They began to trim down their roster today by sending eight players down to the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

Those eight players were Brandon Biro, Brett Murray, C.J. Smith, Casey Fitzgerald, Ryan Jones, Michael Houser, and Dustin Tokarski. Ralph Krueger indicated over the weekend that the Amerks are scheduled to open their training camp on Friday (1/15).

Final rosters, including the taxi squad, are due to the NHL tomorrow. As of now, the Sabres have 31 players remaining on their training camp roster. They need to trim down to at least 29 players by tomorrow. They can carry 23 players on the active roster and a maximum of six on the taxi squad.

The most likely candidates to be sent down to the AHL that remain with the Sabres are Mattias Samuelsson, Arttu Ruotsalainen, and Brandon Davidson.

Check back tomorrow to see who ends up on the final roster and taxi squad heading into opening night.
