2021 Player Report Card: Cody Eakin

Total Season Stats: 46 GP | 3 G | 4 A | 7 PTS

Age: 30

Contract Status: Under contract through 2021-22 ($2.25 million cap hit)

There were some groans amongst the fan base when Cody Eakin was signed to a two-year deal that carried a $2.25 million AAV, last offseason. Unfortunately for the Sabres, things went about as poorly as you could have imagined with Eakin.

He didn’t provide any secondary scoring with only three goals in 46 games and was not good for them defensively. After the coaching change, Eakin found himself as the odd man out under Don Granato. He only played in two of the team’s final 11 games of the season.

The one positive you can take away from his season is that he was part of a penalty kill that did improve over last year.

Now, the question becomes what do the Sabres do with Eakin next season? He has one more year remaining on his contract. If Granato is back as head coach we know that he’s not the biggest fan of his play.

Sending him to the AHL would be a logical move. However, if they move Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart this summer they’re going to need centers to fill out the roster.

At the end of the day, Eakin may have been the worst free-agent signing of the last offseason.
