2021 Player Report Card: Carter Hutton
Hutton’s final season with the Sabres is much of the same
Our report card series continues today with the Sabres veteran goalie, Carter Hutton
Total Season Stats: 13 GP | 12 L | .886 SV% | 3.47 GAA | -7.6 GSAA (Goals Saved Above Average)
Age: 35
Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent
Well, not much to say after the optimistic goalie signing back in July of 2018. With Ullmark being too young and Lehner on the way to Long Island, Hutton was the possible mentor, goalie 1B+ for the Botterill-led Sabres.
Like many things in Sabre land, Hutton’s tenure did not go our way. His performance was reminiscent of years past; not good enough to prop up a poor team yet not bad enough to be immediately replaced. For the 2020-21 season, our hope was that it was in fact his eyes, not his age or improbability of a late bloomer, that caused a poor 19-20 NHL season.
A stark difference between the games netminded by Ullmark and Hutton, things couldn’t be more obvious that this was the end of Hutton’s time here. 94 games later, and season after season, expectations lowered slightly and I would still say we were saddened with the on-ice results. Glad he got paid, happy he was the most handsome goalie in the league with Henrik’s injury but in the end, the grass has to be greener this time around
Season Grade: D+
