Sabres defeat Islanders for 10th consecutive win

October 26, 2006

Score: Buffalo 3, New York Islanders 0

Shots: BUF-27 | NYI-29

Buffalo Goal Scorers: Ales Kotalik (3), Maxim Afinogenov (6), Jason Pominville (6)

New York Islanders Goal Scorers: None

Plus-1: Weathered the storm!

Hopefully everyone reading this is back with power from this wacky October storm to witness Ryan Miller record a 29 save shutout. In a battle between American-born goaltenders, he bested counterpart Rick DiPietro to prove once-and-for-all that his snub from the U.S. Olympic men’s team earlier this year was abhorrent.

Plus-1: Former friends held scoreless

Former Sabres Miroslav Satan and Alexei Zhitnik both were held off the scoresheet tonight, with former head coach Ted Nolan behind the bench. It seems like just yesterday that Zhitnik, specifically, was skating up and down that Aud ice donning a Sabres uniform with Nolan at the helm. Hmm…

Plus-10: The undefeated streak continues

That makes 10 in-a-row for the Buffalo Sabres, and, at this rate, who can see this train stopping? With the lowly Atlanta Thrashers next, the Sabres are SURE to win and extend the streak. I mean, will Atlanta even have a team in 10 to 15 years? I doubt it!

Final Thoughts

Jokes aside it’s always a treat to watch what is arguably the best team in Buffalo Sabres history. Tonight’s game had a taste of those qualities you miss from these players – that Kotalik cannon on the powerplay, the dazzling speed of Afinogenov, and Pominville scoring from the right hash. This team was dominant from the get go, and did not waver throughout the entire regular season. It feels good to watch meaningful games in March, yet again.
