Two seconds was all the Sabres needed to close out a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Instead, Jamie McGinn found a loose puck on the goal line and scored to tie the game at four. Peter Mueller scored the game winning goal for the Avalanche in the shootout.
The Buffalo Sabres got the scoring started early in the first period with a weird goal that sees Marcus Foligno score his second goal of his career and first that features the leap. In fact, it’s so strange that you just have to see it for yourself.
The Avalanche quickly turned around and tied the game up for the first time in the period with a goal from Jamie McGinn. McGinn scored his 18th goal of the season and his sixth goal as an Avalanche. The Sabres would take the lead a few minutes later as Drew Stafford found himself on a shorthanded breakaway and scored his first career shorthanded goal. David Jones would tie the game up with 52 seconds left in the period by scoring on his stomach in front of the net.
The second period would see the Sabres and Avalanche trade goals as well with Gabriel Landeskog scoring on the power play at the 5:35 mark and Marcus Foligno scoring his second of the game with five minutes later. In the third period, in what was thought to be Foligno’s hat trick on the night, the goal was awarded to Alexander Foligno for his first goal as a Buffalo Sabre.
Ryan Miller had a solid night besides giving up four goals. He faced 42 shots compared to the 24 that Semyon Varlamov faced from the Sabres. The Sabres are now three points behind the Washington Capitals and their next game is Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
