Amerks Review: Collecting All The Points

Another weekend features another Rochester Americans back-to-back in which they impressed across the board.

Friday featured an Andrew Hammond shutout, four goals offensively and a win.

Saturday featured four unanswered goals and a win.

Is there anything the Americans can’t do?

Three Big Things

1: Oglevie, the Offensive Stud?

With the recent rash of injuries in Buffalo and Rochester, the Americans have found themselves in a tough position.

Many goal scorers find themselves on-the-shelf or in Buffalo.

This gives other players the opportunity to step up and one player has done that.

Forward Andrew Oglevie has scored a goal in four straight games. Oglevie has also tallied six points in those four games.

After gliding through an injury-riddled first professional season in 2018-19, Oglevie appears ready to build his case to be a call-up for the offensively-challenged Buffalo Sabres.

2: Rising Up Through Adversity

Mixing in the aforementioned roster issues caused by call-ups and injuries, the Rochester Americans continue to out-perform expectations.

Rochester happened to pull out an impressive victory on Saturday, scoring four unanswered goals after falling into a 2-0 hole.

The Americans continue to keep pace atop the North Division, one has to think they will only improve once reinforcements arrive.

3: Taylor’s Return

The Buffalo Sabres announced on Saturday morning that Americans head coach Chris Taylor will return Rochester and resume his role.

Taylor had been filling in for Buffalo Sabres assistant Don Granato, who had been dealing with what has since been revealed to be a severe, life-threatening case of pneumonia.

In Taylor’s absence, Gord Dineen has been filling in admirably.

It goes without saying but the transition back behind the AHL bench should be seamless. One has to think NHL exposure might just help Taylor become that much better of a coach.
