Tyson Jost was a pleasant surprise upon joining the Buffalo Sabres.

The Buffalo Sabres claimed forward Tyson Jost off waivers in mid-November, pulling him from a Minnesota Wild team where he’d mustered up three assists in 12 games. The shake-up proved beneficial for both the Sabres and Jost, as he went on to record 22 points in the next 59 games with Buffalo and found a good footing in the blue and gold.
Waiver pick-ups don’t always work out, but in this case, it turned out to be a good thing, at least in the short-term. Now, it’s a matter of waiting to see what happens next.
The Athletic’s Matthew Fairburn wrote about how Jost wants to stay in Buffalo, but the question is – can he? Jost was a healthy scratch a few times, but that speaks more to the depth and extra forwards on the team than anything against the player himself.
Unfortunately, that same factor may play into consideration with regards to his signing for next season. While Jost is certainly a serviceable player with a lot of redeeming qualities, up-and-comers like Jiří Kulich will fight for roster spots in Buffalo, which could leave Jost on the outside looking in.
Then again, for a 10th-overall draft pick (Jost, 2016 – COL), maybe you can find a spot anyways. Both head coach Don Granato and general manager Kevyn Adams seem to like what they see from Jost. He’s clearly fitting in well with the team, nad having fun doing so. If he wants to come back, I say: go for it.
