Another Brief Update From Blue Cross Arena

I’ve seen the artist formerly known as the War Memorial filled to capacity four times in the last 5-6 years. Three of those occasions were Bruce Springsteen concerts, and the fourth was yesterday’s late matinee. A 5:05 start on an 80 degree Sunday and the joint was sold out. The fans got their money’s worth in a fun game to watch. Some brief notes:

  • I was looking forward to seeing Alexander Holtz for Utica. The Comets also rolled out another former first round pick in Nolan Foote - 27 overall in 2019. So those are two guys from Quinn’s and Krebs’ classes, respectively.
  • The Amerks had more early shots but Utica could have easily led 3-0. They had the high danger chances including a point blank shot off a dreadful turnover (beauty of a glove save by Dell) and a blast from the point that hit the post.
  • Utica did cash in with a hard working backhand goal from AJ Greer, who has four in three games.
  • Amerks responded with two highlight reel goals that had the building rocking. Sean Malone scored on a diving stab at a rebound off a nice rush. That was followed by a JJ Peterka no-look, between the legs pass to Lukas Rousek, who put it home from the doorstep. Watch the video of that one.
  • Utica evened on a nasty snipe on the power play… the shot didn’t just blast Dell’s water bottle, it knocked (or broke) the top clean off the bottle. Hell of a shot.
  • Amerks reclaimed the lead when JJP wristed one from the corner into the crease, and Brandon Biro was there for a nice tip in , a split second before a likely goalie interference call.
  • Utica tied it up late in the second when an Amerks D kicked the puck in after a mad scramble in the crease. Dell came out of the pile and went after the ref, presumably because he thought he had the puck covered, but the goal stood.
  • Good chances for both teams in the third but no goals. Several nice saves by Dell and a near miss for Quinn, ripped high and wide. Utica took a tripping penalty with about 15 seconds left… in the dying seconds, R2 had a blast from the slot for the win, but alas it went wide..
  • Rochester cashed on the PP in OT as R2 didn’t miss a second time off a gorgeous feed from Krebs. Krebs took the puck above the left circle, skated in to find a lane and threaded one through three Utica players. R2 was camped out in Olofsson’s spot in the right circle… one timer for the W!
  • Krebs continues to display fantastic vision and passing. I believe he’s up to seven helpers in the playoffs.
  • R2 was a Tasmanian Devil all night… Utica had to be hating him.
  • JJP looks the part. Just relentless.
  • Quinn didn’t seem to do much, but I noticed all game he was getting hounded, hit, slashed, you name it. Utica seems to be focused on making it a rough ride for him.. I also noticed Quinn taking some late shots I. His way to the bench… to his credit he chipped back at least once.
  • Krebs also seemed the focus of some extra attention, although I have a feeling he’s really chirping it up and earning it.
On to Game 4! Hopefully they can close it out Tuesday night. I will not be able to make that one… Go Amerks.
