NCAA Hockey Friday -- Busy Night

Five Sabres prospects. Three games. Let's get to it.

Minnesota 2, Michigan 1 (ot)

This game was strange from the start, and stayed that way in Minneapolis.

These two teams are loaded with NHL-drafted talent, yet they could only combine for 52 shots on goal on an Olympic-sized sheet.

And take good looks at the Gophers' first goal, and their late disallowed goal (12 seconds left in the third period). There are professional baseball and soccer players, respectively, who can't pull those things off.

As for the Sabres' prospects, there's not much to report.

Michigan's Owen Power and Erik Portillo played well enough, though one would expect Power to be more of a force with so much space to work with. Power finished with two shots, two blocks, and an even plus-minus rating. Portillo stopped 23 shots and wasn't at fault for either Minnesota goal.

Minnesota's Ryan Johnson had a steady night on the Gophers' blueline. The junior's lone statistical contribution was one block.

The longtime rivals return to Mariucci Arena on Saturday night to conclude their weekend set.

Friday game --

UMass-Amherst 3, Northeastern 2

This two-versus-three in the Hockey East standings went the way of the host Minutemen.

UMass never trailed. The Minutemen scored a pair of second period goals 13 seconds apart, before holding off a late Huskies rally.

Devon Levi made 31 saves. The video package below, which shows only UMass highlights, will reveal that Levi had little chance on two of the three Minutemen markers.

The squads are back at it against each other Saturday but at a different venue. Northeastern takes its turn hosting at Matthews Arena.

Friday game --

Western Michigan 4, North Dakota 1

Matteo Costantini notched a primary assist, but ND couldn't match the Broncos in Kalamazoo. Costantini lifted a long pass that led to a breakaway goal.

Costantini's season totals -- five goals, six assists, 11 points, 18 games played

ND and WMU complete their weekend series on Saturday night.
