The weekend's marquee matchup for fans of Sabres' prospects, and maybe all of college hockey, didn't live up to expectations. At least for those who wanted competitive hockey games.
Minnesota and Michigan split a set in Ann Arbor. The Golden Gophers won Friday, 5-1. The Wolverines took the Saturday affair, 6-2.
The highlights don't show a lot of Ryan Johnson (#23 -- Minnesota) or Owen Power (#22 -- Michigan).
But there's a lot to watch of Wolverines' goalie Erik Portillo. The sophomore yielded five goals on Friday, but could hardly be faulted for any of them. Portillo had a good Saturday, but not a lot of work (21 saves).
Northeastern goalie Devon Levi has played himself into consideration for either/both the Hobey Baker and Mike Richter awards. Levi fits the categories -- NCAA's best player (Baker) / NCAA's best goalie (Richter).
The highlights below are a small sampling of Levi's sterling weekend against Providence. The sophomore stopped 71 of 72 shots in 2-0 and 4-1 wins.
Is Levi driven for perfection? Take a look at his immediate reaction to the rebound he yielded that led to the Friars' Saturday goal.
The below highlights are of the weekend set between nationally ranked North Dakota and St. Cloud State. St. Cloud blasted ND on Friday, 8-1. The visitors rallied for a split on Saturday, winning 5-3.
Sabres' pick Matteo Costantini returned to ND's lineup after missing the previous four games through illness, but didn't register a point in either game.
