Giveaways, theme nights highlight season

NHL: Buffalo Sabres at Detroit Red Wings Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Sabres are stepping up their promotional game, with 12 giveaway nights announced for the 2018-19 season. The team has also announced 24 promotional nights and 3 specific theme nights.

The Sabres’ first three home games of the season will all feature fan giveaways for those in attendance at KeyBank Center. Fans at the home opener on Thursday, October 4 will find a blue, gold or white t-shirt at their seat. A magnet schedule will be given to fans at the October 6 game, while a One Buffalo car magnet will be distributed on October 8.

Other giveaways include Sabres player aprons on November 21 and a tuxedo-themed koozie on December 31 for New Year’s Eve.

Bobbleheads will be given out at Fan Appreciation Night on April 4, though it’s not clear at this point just who, or what, the bobblehead will be of. (It could be Jack Eichel, it could be Sabretooth.... or perhaps a fan vote during the season will determine.) Last season, the team gave away Dominik Hasek bobbleheads.

In addition to those giveaways, each Saturday afternoon home game will now be known as a “Sabretooth Saturday.” The first 5,000 children will receive a mascot-themed giveaway at those games (November 3, 10; December 8; February 9, 23).

The Sabres will celebrate Hockey Fights Cancer night on November 27. Fans in attendance will receive a HFC scarf. Meanwhile, fans at Luck of the Irish night on March 17 will be treated to raffle giveaways throughout the game. The team will also host Military Appreciation Night on November 10.

Fans can also plan ahead for these additional promotional nights:

Family Pack games (ability to purchase package with four 300-Level II tickets, hot dogs, sodas & popcorn for $196):

  • October: 4, 6, 8, 25
  • November: 3, 10, 21
  • December: 4, 8, 22, 31
  • January: 12
  • February: 9, 10, 15
  • March: 4, 14, 17, 28, 31
  • April: 2, 4

Kids Day games (ability to purchase up to four kids tickets for $15 each with purchase of a 300-Level II ticket): October 8, November 3, November 10, December 8, February 9, February 23

Sabres Style games: October 25, December 13, February 10, March 28

Finally, students will be able to take advantage of the LECOM Student Value Seats, available for all 41 home games. These tickets, which will require a valid student ID for pickup, will range in price from $20 - $35 and will be in the 300-Level V seating areas.

In years past, the Sabres have often not released their promotional/giveaway schedules in advance like this, so this is a welcome change for fans, who can now better plan ahead for the 2018-19 NHL season if they’re interested in that sort of thing. The giveaways planned for this season are certainly more than we’ve seen in years past as well, though they still may not be as “expensive” as some other team’s.

While a magnet schedule or a koozie may not be the thing that brings someone in the door, it’s fun - and it can’t hurt to show some appreciation for the fans. Announcing events like Hockey Fights Cancer night, or the Sabres Style events, in advance, can also make a difference in fans’ planning. (Nothing quite like buying tickets for something ahead of time, only for a different ticket promo - such as a family pack - to be advanced later, right?)

Sabres fans, what are your thoughts? What else would you like to see added to the Sabres’ promotional/theme nights or giveaways in the future?
