Is It Time for a New Sabres Goal Song?

Should the team “clear its throat” and move on from the DJ Kool classic?

It’s been three seasons since the Buffalo Sabres introduced DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat” as the team’s new goal song, following a fan vote. With arena atmosphere a key part of the gameday experience for fans and players alike, it is time for the Sabres to change it up?

The Sabres haven’t officially announced anything for the 2018-19 season, but when Buffalo newbie Vladimir Sobotka lit the lamp late in the opening period of Tuesday’s preseason game against the Penguins, “Let Me Clear My Throat” rang out over the speakers.

While it certainly was a fun goal song for a while, many fans have spoken up about the team changing that for the upcoming season.

So what could some other options be?

Back in 2015, the team proposed several options for a new goal song, voted on by fans in a bracket challenge.

The players and front office members chose the following songs: “Howl” by The Gaslight Anthem, “We Party (You Shout)” by Andrew W.K., “Coming for You” by the Offspring and DJ Kool’s winner.

Entercom radio station representatives chose the other four options: Tenpole Tudor’s “Swords of a Thousand Men,” “Krazy” by Pitbull, “Yeah Yeah Yeah” by New Politics and “The Boys Are Back” by Dropkick Murphys.

Only a small handful of the players from that 2015-16 team are still in Buffalo, including Justin Bailey, Zach Bogosian, Jack Eichel, Zemgus Girgensons, Johan Larsson, Jake McCabe, Rasmus Ristolainen and Linus Ullmark.

There are a lot of new players on the team, and with the Sabres’ potential impending resurgence with the likes of Rasmus Dahlin and others, maybe it’s time to change that goal song once again. It’s a new era in the world of Buffalo sports, and some may argue that the music played in the arena - especially the goal song - should reflect that.

Some will suggest that the Sabres have individual goal songs for each player, chosen by said player, but from a game presentation standpoint, that would be challenging to pull off. Sometimes it’s not immediately clear who’s going to get credit for a goal, or if an opposing player puts it in, who the last player to touch it was. The goal song has to be put into action pretty much instantaneously, so it’s likely not realistic to have individual songs for players.

So what other options could there be?

How about “The Shout Song,” perhaps? Other suggestions that have been posed: “Sabre Dance,” “Song #2,” or something by a hometown band - even something written or composed specifically for the Sabres, perhaps by a band like Every Time I Die.

Do you think it’s time for the Sabres to change their goal song? What would you like it to be?
