Player Report Card: Josh Gorges

A rough season for Gorges, likely his last in Buffalo

NHL: Buffalo Sabres at Montreal Canadiens Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

Season Stats: 34 GP | 0 G | 2 A | 2 PTS

Age: 33

Contract Status: UFA

In all likelihood, the Buffalo Sabres are done with Josh Gorges. What remains to be seen is if Gorges is done with the NHL, and vice versa. The pending unrestricted free agent hasn’t ruled out a return to hockey next season following a forgettable season in Buffalo.

Gorges was the oldest player on the Sabres’ backend this season, just over ten years the senior of his at-times D partner Rasmus Ristolainen. The 33-year-old played less than half this season, sidelined often as either a healthy scratch or with a lower-body injury. The Sabres reportedly made a push to move him before the trade deadline, but were unsuccessful in doing so.

His 34 games played this season and measly two points marked career lows for Gorges. He played alongside guys like Matt Tennyson, Nathan Beaulieu and Justin Falk - clearly not the prime of the Sabres’ blueline. Quite frankly, his age caught up to him in some aspects, and as the Sabres move toward a younger core, Gorges just doesn’t seem to have a place in Buffalo anymore.
