Player Report Card: Johan Larsson

Larsson’s play this season left much to be desired.

NHL: Buffalo Sabres at Tampa Bay Lightning Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Season Stats: 80 GP | 4 G | 13 A | 17 PTS

Age: 25

Contract Status: Signed through 2018-19

On the stats sheet, Johan Larsson personally had a good year. Comparing to his past seasons, Larsson actually tied a career-high in points with 17.

In the grand scheme of things, Larsson had a bad season. With another system for Larsson to find his way into, it is clear that his style of play does not mesh well with what Housley is currently attempting to install.

Larsson showed signs of promise last season but his Buffalo Sabres career really began to wind down after his devastating injury against the Boston Bruins during the 2016-17 season. Following the dislocation of his elbow and wrist, Larsson has just not been the same player.

While he has racked up those 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists) in a career-high 80 games, something has been lacking with Larsson’s game in Buffalo.

With Larsson racking up a cap-hit of 1.475 million next season, he might be destined for the waiver wire (and subsequently Rochester) very soon.

Season Grade: D-
