Tonight was a back and forth affair between the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators. An entertaining game between two teams at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
The Sabres started the scoring late in the first period. Marco Scandella turned and fired a slap shot from the point that got through a screen in front of Craig Anderson. The two clubs played a pretty even period, but the Sabres skated out of the period with a 1-0 lead.
Ottawa took control in the second period. Ryan Dzingel set the tone 36 seconds into the period tying the game at one. A little over three minutes later Dzingel added a second goal to put his club in front 2-1.
The Senators controlled possession throughout the period and the only reason the score remained close was because of Lehner.
Kyle Okposo left the game in the second period and didn’t return after a scary collision in the neutral zone with Bobby Ryan. Neither player saw each other and Okposo’s head hit the shoulder of Ryan.
Sam Reinhart tied the game in the back half of the middle frame. He made a nice play to get free of Mark Stone and passed the puck to an open Benoit Pouliot in front. He fumbled the pass, but Reinhart followed up the play and tapped home the puck.
Ottawa took the lead back before the end of the second. Rookie defenseman Thomas Chabot came down the wing and beat Lehner clean with a nice shot to make it 3-2 after 40 minutes.
The Sabres tied the game back up 27 seconds into the third period. Ryan O’Reilly made a nice play behind the net to feed Scott Wilson for his sixth of the season.
Each team had some opportunities to get the go-ahead goal in the third, but neither could get the puck to the back of the net.
We headed to overtime and again each team had their chances. Nick Baptiste turned Erik Karlsson inside out to get in alone on Anderson but was stopped. For only the second time this season, we headed to a shootout.
Believe it or not, the Sabres were actually able to pick up the win in the skills contest. They scored twice (Reinhart and Jacob Josefson) and Lehner saved two of the three Senators shooters.
