Things for the Buffalo Sabres started poorly right off the hop. The Calgary Flames came in losers of four straight and were a desperate hockey team tonight. The Sabres were never really in the game.
Sam Bennett got the Flames on the board a little over five minutes into the game on a goal that would set the tone for the game. Mark Jankowski cleared the puck to the front from behind the net. It went between the legs of Chad Johnson. Eventually, Bennett picked up the rebound for the goal.
Jankowski put the Flames ahead by two exactly three minutes later and we were on our way to a long night.
Chad Johnson would make a big save at the end of the period. At the time looked like it would be a turning point. Not so much.
The Flames continued to fill the net in the middle frame. Mark Giordano made it 3-0 five minutes into the second period. Then a minute later Sean Monahan hammered a one-timer past Johnson to make it 4-0.
That goal would end the night for Johnson who was replaced by Robin Lehner.
Calgary capped off their scoring late in the second as Dougie Hamilton joined the party with a power-play goal. The Flames held a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes.
The third period didn’t have much to write home about. The Flames sustained possession and controlled the play like the previous periods.
Casey Nelson did play the role of spoiler with 17 seconds remaining. He put a shot by David Rittich for the Sabres only goal of the game. Sabres are back at it tomorrow night in Ottawa.
