The final rosters around the National Hockey League were due to be finalized today by 5 PM EST. All teams had to be under the salary cap and carry a roster with no more than 23 players.
For the second straight season, the Buffalo Sabres will have an opening night roster that consists of 13 forwards, eight defensemen, two goaltenders. The eighth defenseman on the roster is a bit of a surprise, but we’ll save that for another day.
The Sabres currently have 27 players that are still with the club with the addition of Remi Elie off the waiver wire this afternoon. They trimmed down to 23 players by placing Johan Larsson, Sean Malone, Matt Hunwick, and Scott Wilson on IR. Injured reserve rules in the NHL prohibit a player from playing in a game for at least seven days. With Hunwick, Wilson, and Malone being out long-term, only Larsson is the player we’ll have to keep an eye on over the next week.
