The Buffalo Sabres continued their strong western Canada road trip with perhaps their best performance of the season against the Edmonton Oilers. The game started off pretty slow as neither team was generating much.
The visitors got the first goal of the game on their suddenly hot power play. Sam Reinhart deflected a Rasmus Ristolainen point shot by Cam Talbot in the later part of the opening period. The Sabres would take that 1-0 lead into the first period.
Then the second period happened. Just 17 seconds into the middle frame Ryan O’Reilly put the Sabres up 2-0 on a bad rebound from Talbot.
The floodgates opened.
Just a few minutes later Kyle Okposo tried to pass to Zemgus Girgensons on a 2 on 1. He didn’t find the stick of his teammate. Instead, he found Girgensons skate, but the puck still found its way into the net to make it 3-0.
Jack Eichel got in on the scoring fun with a snipe over the blocker side of Talbot on the power play for his third of four points on the night.
The Oilers made a goaltending change at this point as Al Montoya relieved Talbot. The Sabres didn’t stop filling the net. O’Reilly scored his second of the period on a beautiful tic tac toe play for the team’s third power-play goal of the night. The Sabres carried that 5-0 lead into the locker room after 40 minutes.
In the final 20 minutes, the Sabres took the foot off the gas and protected the shutout for Robin Lehner. Tonight was a long overdue fun game for Sabres fans.

Comment of the Game
Where the Hell has this team been all season?
They are actually fun to watch right now, for the first time all year.
I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it left.
