2018 NHL Draft: Sabres select defenseman Mattias Samuelsson 32nd overall

The Buffalo Sabres got things started again on day two of the 2018 NHL Draft. With the first pick of the second round they selected big left shot defenseman Mattias Samuelsson from the US National Development Program at 32nd overall. He’s also born of Swedish decent, of course.

Samuelsson is a big defenseman at 6’4” and 218 pounds. He’s solid in his own end of the ice and is a safe pick defensively here for the Sabres. He’s not known for his skating and thats an area he can work on. Especially his lateral movement against faster players.

He scored 11 goals and 31 points in 58 games for the U18 US National team this season. He can give you some numbers offensively, but won’t light up the scoreboard. He could be a good partner for an offensive-minded defenseman like Brendan Guhle down the road.

He’ll go to Western Michigan University next season.

Sabres don’t pick again until the first pick of round four and 94th overall.
