The Sabres are heading to the Winter Classic ... but you already knew that of course.
The NHL, the Sabres and the Rangers held the annual Winter Classic press conference at Citi Field in New York today and didn’t really give us much new information. It was mostly everyone involved saying how excited they were to be a part of it, how fun an event it is, the usual stuff you’d probably expect. Jack Eichel, Ryan O’Reilly and Jason Pominville were all in attendance.
The biggest takeaway from the afternoon was the Sabres logo on the jumbotron, which based on previous Winter Classic press conferences will likely be the logo worn during the game. It’s the classic Sabres logo with one slight change: “NY” has been plastered on the bottom of it.
Pominville, the only Sabres player in attendance to play in the Winter Classic the last go-around, was also the only Sabre who spoke at the press conference.
“I was fortunate enough to play in the first one around 10 years ago in Buffalo,” Pominville said. “Look at what it’s become today. It’s a privilege to be a part of this. It’s an honor. Our fans are excited about it. We’re excited. Hopefully we can put on a good show.”
The Sabres and Rangers will faceoff on New Years day at Citi Field to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original Winter Classic. Like the first, the Sabres will serve as the home team.
Update: We have more logo news from the Sabres courtesy of the NHL’s snapchat. In addition to the Sabres “NY” logo, Buffalo will also have a version of the leaping Buffalo with “Sabres” written in it. Hat tip to Sportslogos.net for the screengrab.
