Buffalo to ice more experienced roster in rematch

NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs at Buffalo Sabres Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

After last night’s 3-0 loss, the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs faceoff again tonight, with this game back at KeyBank Center. Friday night’s game saw the Sabres ice a relatively young roster, filled with a lot of players who are likely to end up in the AHL this season. Saturday’s game, however, should provide a look at a more stacked, experienced NHL roster.

Tonight’s game also marks the first Sabres preseason game of the year to be televised.

Three Questions

1. Can Sabres take advantage of lighter Leafs lineup?

Last night, a younger Sabres roster faced a Toronto team with players like Auston Matthews and Nazem Kadri. Tonight’s game will see a closer-to-NHL-ready lineup for Buffalo, while the Leafs will be missing some of their big guns. Obviously, it’s still just preseason, but can the Sabres show off their skills tonight moreso than last night?

2. How much of an impact can Justin Bailey make?

Bailey is one of the Sabres’ developing young talents, and he’ll take tonight’s game as another opportunity to showcase his growth. He’s already seen time in several preseason games and will play on a gritty fourth line with Deslauriers and Criscuolo.

3. Who will be sent down after the game?

With the Rochester Americans opening their training camp next week, the Sabres have already trimmed 10 players off their roster. As the NHL club gets closer to regular season, more players will continue to join the AHL crew. For some, it’s a matter of when, not if, they’ll be sent down. For others, they’ll have just a few more chances to show themselves off before a decision is made.
