Recap: Power play powers Sabres past Red Wings 2-1

New, comments

The Sabres won their final game in Joe Louis Arena.

NHL: Buffalo Sabres at Anaheim Ducks Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Both the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings had very little to play for coming in to tonight’s game. Both teams were out of the playoff race, and are coming off disappointing seasons for different reasons.

But the Sabres came out of the gate strong tonight, and used their league-leading power play to score two goals and take down the Red Wings 2-1.

The Sabres out shot the Wings 13-5 in the first period, and Jack Eichel would open the scoring on the power play with assists to O’Reilly and Ristolainen to open the scoring. Buffalo would also score the first goal of the second period on the power play, when Matt Moulson slammed home a lose puck for the 2-0 lead.

The Wings would come back and cut the lead in half thanks to Thomas Tatar, but the Sabres held strong all through the third period to secure the 2-1 win.

Robin Lehner played a great game tonight, stopping 34 of 35 shots, and stopping all six shots on the Detroit power play.

The Sabres have a quick turnaround, facing the Penguins in Buffalo tomorrow night, and we’ve got nine more of these bad boys to go this season.

Three Questions

1. How will the defensive call-ups perform tonight?

2. Which of these two teams has had the more disappointing season?

After tonight, we’re gonna go with the Wings.

3. Can the Sabres make history tonight at Joe Louis Arena?

Courtesy of the always-excellent Sabres media preview, if the Sabres win tonight it will be the first time they’ve won three games in a row against the Red Wings since 1989, and the first time they’ve won back-to-back games at the Joe since 1981. Crazy.

Yes.

Comment of the Game

by "please don't blow this".... do you mean.

"don’t blow this by screwing up potential draft positioning"

or "don’t blow this and win the dang game"?
