Were the Buffalo Sabres going to show some spine after losing three straight games? Well, they jumped into an early lead before losing 4-3 at the Columbus Blue Jackets after coming back to tie the game in the third period, but then giving up a late winner.
Evan Rodrigues put Buffalo up after just a couple of minutes, but soon after a David Savard shot from the blue line snuck in past an unsighted Robin Lehner. The penalty kill went back to it’s earlier season futility, as they gave up two goals late in Columbus power plays.
Those goals sandwiched a rare strike from defenseman Josh Gorges, whose point shot beat Sergei Bobrovsky who was being screened by Jack Eichel. It was Gorges’ first goal of the season and Eich really deserved an assist for that goal.
The Sabres came back to tie it up quickly in the third period with another Rasmus Ristolainen rocket, but a Cody Franson turnover right in front of the net allowed Boone Jenner to evade Lehner’s reach and put the puck home.
The two teams play again tomorrow, this time in Buffalo for the second game of the home-and-home series.
1. How long will Eichel’s point streak last?
The streak ended at eleven unfortunately. It was a surprise that Buffalo scored three goals and somehow none of them had Eichel on the scoreboard, even though he got an unofficial assist on Gorges’ goal mentioned above.
2. Will the Sabres end Bobrovsky’s shutout streak?
Yes, and it took rookie Evan Rodrigues only 2:50 in the first period to end Bobrovsky’s run at 182:50 with a top shelf snipe.
3. When will Lehner break out of his funk?
Not tonight. He shipped four goals again while making 35 saves. The real backbreaker was the last goal, coming as late as it did in the game off a defensive zone turnover.
Comment of the Game
The Sabres just suck in the third period lately, don’t they?
