The Buffalo Sabres announced late Wednesday night they’ve assigned forward Alex Nylander to Team Sweden for the upcoming World Junior tournament taking place in Buffalo.
The 2016 eighth overall pick will participate in his third straight U20 World Junior tournament, Last year Nylander was one of the better players scoring five goals and 12 points in seven games.
Nylander’s season got off to a rough start with the injury at the Prospects Challenge that resulted in him missing a few months. He has two goals and six points in 14 games with the Rochester Amerks.
The Sabres are hoping the tournament can get his season jump-started. He’ll go play against his peers and hopefully dominate like he did last year. Here is the exact statement from general manager Jason Botterill in the media press release:
“The World Junior Championship is a prestigious and challenging tournament that we are so excited to be hosting here in Buffalo. This opportunity will provide another important step in Alex’s development.”
Nylander will join other Sabres prospects Casey Mittelstadt, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Marcus Davidsson and Vojtech Budik as players competing in the tournament.
