Sabres vs Panthers Game Recap: Another Dud

Sabres lay an egg in a 4-1 loss to the Panthers

NHL: Florida Panthers at Buffalo Sabres Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

The first period was the Sabres best period of the game. They controlled the play for the majority of the opening 20 minutes. Sabres got on the board first on the power play. Victor Antipin let a point shot go that was deflected past Roberto Luongo by Kyle Okposo for his second of the season. The Sabres led 1-0 after the first period and appeared on their way to a good night.

The good times ended for the Sabres after the first. Once the second period began it was all Florida. The Panthers jumped to an 8-1 lead in shots, thanks mostly to a power play in which they just missed a few chances to score.

Evgenii Dadonov got the Panthers on the board with his seventh of the season on a loose puck in front of Robin Lehner after the Sabres failed to clear the zone. Although they were outplayed the Sabres still had an opportunity to win the game with the game tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.

The start of the third period looked much like the second period. Sloppy play by both teams, but the Panthers had the better scoring opportunities. Just over three minutes into the third Ian McCoshen threw a seemingly harmless puck towards the net that ended up beating Lehner due to a screen in front to put the Panthers ahead 2-1.

Buffalo would get a few scoring chances including a Sam Reinhart chance but was foiled by Luongo. Florida would add two empty-net goals in the final minute and a half for a 4-1 final.

Final Score: Panthers 4 | Sabres 1

SOG: Panthers 31 | Sabres 25

Panthers Goal Scorers: Dadonov (7), McCoshen (3), Barkov (5) and Trocheck (8)

Sabres Goal Scorers: Kyle Okposo (2)

Three Stars

1. Jonathan Huberdeau (3 A)

2. Evgenii Dadonov ( 1 G, 1 A)

3. Roberto Luongo (24 saves on 25 shots)

What to Watch

1. Nathan Beaulieu makes his return.

Beaulieu played 21:05 in his return to the lineup. He looked pretty good at times for his first game back since October 20th.

2. Continue to build on the past few games.

Maybe one day.

3. Shoot Jack.

Eichel had three shots on goal but wasn’t a big factor. Especially when you add in he was a -3 on the night.

Comment of the Game

This pretty much sums up the game...

Wow.

This game is boring. Two bad teams apparently can’t play an entertaining game it seems.
